I had the distinct pleasure of being asked to return again this year to present at the California Association of Public Information Officers conference. Because I've been steeped in helping organizations and government agencies with crafting these key documents, I shared some tips and bits with California's PIOs.
While we reviewed many finer points in what a social media policy should include, I'm hoping a big take away was that social media policies are strategic documents. They set the organizational culture around social media inside and public-facing. It deserves thought and attention.
One point that seemed to hit home is that you really need two policies - one internal and one external, i.e. a "terms of use" agencies should post on their social media platforms.
